Relationships & Sexuality Education
Safety matters. So does agency.
High-quality RSE should help children and young people understand themselves, their bodies, relationships, boundaries and choices. For learners with SEND, that education may need to be more explicit, accessible and responsive - not less ambitious.
Safeguarding and advocacy belong together
RSE & RHE are not simply about protecting young people from risk. It is also about developing knowledge, communication, consent, self-advocacy and the ability to participate safely in relationships and community life.
The challenge is to reduce foreseeable harm while developing the knowledge and judgement young people will need when adults are not beside them.

Research into practice
Paul is the author of Providing Relationships and Sex Education for Special Learners, published by Routledge as part of the nasen Spotlight series.
"Unquestionably five stars! An excellent book which will enhance practice in any educational setting, but surely will become an indispensable resource for special schools and centres everywhere". Certified Amazon review
The book grew from postgraduate research and years of practice supporting schools and professionals to develop inclusive RSE provision for learners with SEND.
“This is not an area of choice for schools; it is one of absolute duty.”
David Stewart OBE
Accessible does not mean simplified ambition
Learners may need different language, repetition, visual support, sensory approaches, explicit teaching or additional time.
The goal is not to reduce the entitlement, but to make the learning genuinely accessible.

"Engaged well with the audience and made a difficult subject, quite easy and fun with a relaxed attitude...thought provoking and engaged with our thoughts and discussions about sex ed for children with cognitive/developmental and physical disability. Thank you for a lovely day"
Jo Burton, Deputy Head, Silverwood School
RSE is about more than keeping safe.
It is about helping young people understand themselves, communicate their needs, develop relationships and exercise increasing agency in their own lives.
