Responding to Behaviour

Behaviour is information. Adult response matters.

Behaviour is rarely just the problem in front of us. It can reflect communication, regulation, stress, unmet need, previous experience and the meaning a young person has made of what is happening around them.

INSIGHT training helps teams look beyond control and compliance towards safer, more relational and more effective responses.

Behaviour as Communication

Training explores what behaviour may be telling us about need, regulation, environment, relationships and experience. Participants consider functions of behaviour, survival responses, emotional development and the influence of context on what becomes visible in the moment.

The approach is informed by current evidence, professional practice and ongoing doctoral research into behaviour, wellbeing and relational approaches in education.

The aim is not to excuse behaviour, but to understand it well enough to respond effectively.

The Adult Response Matters Too

Difficult moments are rarely shaped by one nervous system alone. Adult interpretation, tone, expectation and response can either support regulation or contribute to escalation.

Training helps staff reflect on what happens between behaviour and response - and how that moment can change what happens next.

Boundaries without understanding escalate. Understanding without boundaries drifts.

From Regulation to Participation

Practical strategies focus on co-regulation, communication, predictable boundaries, emotional safety and relational repair.

The emphasis is on helping children and young people regain enough regulation to participate, communicate and learn.

Relational practice is not the absence of authority. It is the responsible use of authority.

Training can be adapted to staff experience, learner need and the priorities of the setting, from whole-team development to focused work around specific patterns of behaviour.

“When looking for training around ‘behaviour management’, it was vital that we had an organisation who put relationships, love and curiosity at the core of their message, whilst also giving staff practical and realistic solutions for helping children who may become dysregulated and experience big feelings.

Paul led us through the Responding to Behaviours as Communication day with warmth, humour and real-life examples. The day was well received by all, with a clear message that if you get the culture right, everything else will follow.”

Ellie MacQuarrie, Headteacher, Stithians School

Behaviour changes when the response changes.

Better outcomes begin with better interpretation. INSIGHT training helps teams understand what they are seeing, respond with greater clarity and create conditions in which regulation, participation and learning become more possible.
